DSU Pick Sixth and MC Picked Eighth in GSC Preseason

FBS and FCS conferences such as the SEC, SWAC and C-USA have already made their picks for all-conference teams and predictions on conference favorites. Division II and Division III conferences are starting to put out their preseason teams and predictions.

Division II Gulf South Conference, of which Delta State University and Mississippi

The Gulf South Conference has released its All-Conference teams and predictions.

College are members, released its predictions and All-Conference teams on Aug. 3. The other coaches in the conference didn’t give the Statesmen and Choctaws much love.

DSU was picked to finish sixth in the conference with 31 total points. MC was picked to finish eighth with 16 points, just ahead of last place, Shorter University, which was picked ninth with eight points.

The University of North Alabama was picked to finish first with 62 points, with Valdosta State University picked in second place after the team collected 54 points. The University of West Georgia was picked to finish third with 49 points, and Florida Institute of Technology landed in fourth place with 47 points.

The University of West Alabama ended up in fifth place with 32 points, and the University of West Florida was sandwiched between DSU and MC for seventh place with 25 points. North Alabama earned seven first-place votes, and Valdosta State and West Georgia each earned one first-place vote.

Delta State senior running back Chris Robinson and senior offensive tackle Derrick McClelland were named All-Conference offense. Statesmen junior linebacker Chandler Ector earned All-Conference defense honors. DSU return specialist LaDarion Peterson ended up on All-Conference Special Teams.

Mississippi College placed junior tight end Arik Washington on the All-Conference offensive team. Choctaws senior defensive back Chris Manning was named to the All-Conference defense team. MC senior punter Matthew Turcotte landed on the All-Conference special teams.

Pittsboro, Miss., native and West Alabama senior wide receiver Donta Armstrong earned All-Conference offense honors. West Point, Miss., native and North Alabama senior defensive lineman Freddie Reed ended up as All-Conference defense.

Mississippi College opens the season on the road on Thursday, Aug. 31, against Clark Atlanta University. Delta State is at home to start the season hosting Tarleton State University on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Millsaps College and Belhaven University are the only four-year schools that haven’t seen their conferences post-preseason All-Conference teams and predictions. As soon as those conferences make their selections, they will get a blog post.
