Minnesota Dominates New Orleans on Offense and Defense

Slow starts have been a major problem for the New Orleans Saints over the last three seasons. The team hasn’t won a season opener since 2013. It shouldn’t be shocking to learn that the Saints also have not made the playoffs since that campaign. New Orleans started 0-2 in 2014, and 0-3 in 2015 and 2016. All three years, the team has finished with a 7-9 record. Continue Reading

Three things should you watch for if you are going to watch the Saints-Ravens game

The 2017 NFL preseason comes to a close this Thursday, Aug. 31, with all 32 teams in action. The following Thursday, the season will begin with defending champions the New England Patriots hosting the Kansas City Chiefs and a full slate of games around the rest of the league. New Orleans will end the preseason in a game against the Baltimore Ravens, which will broadcast on NBC. This is the last tune-up game before the Saints do it for real on Monday Night Football on Sept. Continue Reading

Saints’ Defense Spectacular in Preseason

Here are two phrases that don’t normally go together: “the New Orleans Saints” and “eight straight quarters without giving up points on defense.”

In recent seasons, New Orleans’ defense allowed opponents to score points in bunches, and it was up to the offense to win shootouts. That has not been the case for most of this preseason, as the Saints’ defense has been the star of the show, allowing just 20 points thus far. The offense, on the other hand, has struggled, failing to score more than 14 points in three games. Even adding a Los Angeles Chargers interception for a touchdown, New Orleans’ three opponents have only scored 27 points combined. Meanwhile, the Saints have scored 40 points in three games for a plus-13 point differential. Continue Reading

Saints vs. Chargers: What to Watch For

New Orleans will try to break a 10-game losing streak in the preseason this Sunday, Aug. 20, when the team faces the Los Angeles Chargers, which will air at 7 p.m. on the NFL

Network. If the Saints are going to break their losing streak, they might have to do it without quarterback Drew Brees or running backs Adrian Peterson and Mark Ingram. It looks like the third week of the preseason will be the first time that Brees and a few other veterans hit the field. Brees’ absence in the first two preseason games wasn’t a big deal. Saints Fire Two Doctors

There is one group of people that both NFL coaches and players want to have absolute trust in their dealings, and that is team doctors. Coaches need to accurately know how a player is injured and a player’s career depends on proper diagnosis of injuries. That is the exact opposite of what happened with the New Orleans Saints. Mike Triplett of ESPN reported that New Orleans has fired a pair of orthopedists that misdiagnosed an injury to cornerback Delvin Breaux. Deryk Jones and Misty Suri diagnosed the player with a contusion, but coaches later learned that he actually had a fractured fibula. Continue Reading

Saints Drop Another Preseason Game

Here is an interesting question to ponder after the Cleveland Browns defeated the New Orleans Saints 20-14: Do you know when the last time time the Saints won a preseason game was? If you said Aug. 23, 2014, you would be a winner. Since that 23-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts, New Orleans has gone 0-10 in the preseason since its last victory. In the first quarter, New Orleans looked solid on defense as they held the Browns without a first down and three punts in the first quarter. Continue Reading

Things to Watch for in Saints’ Preseason Opener

Starting this Thursday night, the New Orleans Saints will try to fix the 7-9 record that has plagued the team for the last three seasons. New Orleans opens the 2017 preseason on

the road against the Cleveland Browns. If the Saints are going to reverse the 7-9 trend, they have to fix the biggest albatross around their neck—defense. New Orleans has been terrible on defense for a long time now, and that has shown up in its win-loss record. Each offseason, New Orleans has tried to fix the defense but has been in salary-cap hell due to bad contracts from previous years. Continue Reading

Saints Quarterback Drew Brees Starting Youth Co-ed Flag Football League

While growing up in Texas, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees didn’t begin

playing tackle football until his freshman year of high school. Instead, the record-setting quarterback played flag football. Playing that sport at an early age probably didn’t hurt him in becoming one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. Now that Brees has kids of his own, he told ESPN.com’s Mike Triplett in an interview that he wants to transfer his love of the game to them in the safer version he played. Brees’ oldest son, Baylen, started playing flag football last year at age 7, and his second son, Bowen, started playing this year at age 6. Continue Reading

The Opening of NFL Training Camps is a Month Away

The seventh month of the year is important—and not just because we celebrate

Independance Day here in the U.S.

July means the start of training camps. That means the preseason is just around the corner, and the regular season is a month behind that one. The Dallas Cowboys are the first team to open training camp when rookies report on July 17. Veterans for the Cowboys report on July 22, with the first day of practice on July 24. Dallas isn’t the first team to hit the practice field as a team. Continue Reading

Saints Defensive Tackle Fairley Done for 2017 Season

This offseason isn’t going well for the New Orleans Saints. Injuries have hit the team’s

offensive line, and the Saints are still trying to get last season’s injured players healthy. New Orleans got bad news on Monday, June 26, when defensive tackle Nick Fairley was placed on season-ending injured reserve. The defensive tackle will miss the entire 2017, and more importantly, his career could be over. Fairley came into the league after doctors diagnosed him with an enlarged heart at the 2011 NFL Combine. Continue Reading
