JSU Wins, MSU Ranked, UM and USM Stumble, and More

It was an interesting week of ups and downs for fans of Mississippi football. While some teams were able to climb out of a rut, others fell deeper in. On Saturday, Oct. 28, a winless Jackson State University faced an early 0-3 deficit against Mississippi Valley State University after the first quarter before jumping out to a 10-3 lead at the break—a rarity for JSU this season. Jackson State added to its lead with a touchdown in the third quarter for a commanding 17-3 lead. Continue Reading

Midseason Conerly Trophy Favorites

This might be the most wide-open season for the Conerly Trophy, which goes to the best college-football player in Mississippi each year. There are plenty of great athletes in our state this year, but no player has overwhelmed the rest of the field. There are still plenty of games left for someone to take the lead on the field. University of Mississippi quarterback Shea Patterson’s season-ending knee injury on Oct. 1 has made the Conerly landscape even less clear. Continue Reading

Patterson Out, USM and MSU for Bowl Eligibility, and More

This is quickly becoming a lost season for the University of Mississippi. The NCAA, cell-phone records and injuries have taken turns derailing this season for the Rebels. The NCAA investigation and the cell-phone records of former head coach Hugh Freeze coming to light are both well documented. The problems with the NCAA led to a bowl ban this season, and Freeze resigned after evidence of him calling escort services surfaced. Things haven’t been much better on the field, either. Rebels and Bulldogs Look to End Losing Streaks

Two college football teams are going to break a losing streak this weekend when four teams on a combined 13-game losing streak collide. Vanderbilt University will try to break a three-game losing streak on the road against the University of Mississippi. The Rebels enter the game on a three-game losing streak of their own. The Commodores’ losing streak started with the University of Alabama and continued against the University of Florida. Vanderbilt spent last weekend getting beaten down by the University of Georgia. SEC Coaches’ Job Security in Flux

Job security is limited to just a few head coaches in college football. University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban is one of those coaches who won’t have to worry about getting the pink slip. His winning ways mean that he would have to commit a major crime to lose his job. Mississippi State University head coach Dan Mullen has reached a good deal of job security for his results with the Bulldogs, as well. He has won 64 games, taken MSU to seven straight bowl games and earned a No. Continue Reading

Mississippi’s Week-Two College Football Scores

Week two of the college-football season was another set of ups and down for our state. The University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Delta State University and Holmes Community College all are 2-0, and Hinds Community College is 1-0 after completing a game for the first time this season. The Eagles had to cancel their first game due to a power outage. The University of Southern Mississippi and Millsaps College bounced back from week-one losses to be at 1-1, and Alcorn State University lost its second game, also putting the Braves at 1-1. Other teams have not fared so well thus far. Continue Reading

College Football Week Two Picks

Week one of college football is finally finished after a slate of games that stretched over five days. It was a standard week of games with no thrilling upsets of top-ranked teams. There were some shocking final scores, though. However, there are several schools that some might say overachieved to start the season. Howard University deserves props for its victory over the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Bison’s win is the biggest upset against the points spread in college-football history. MSU, UM, DSU and ASU Win Season Openers; JSU, MVSU and USM Lose

While a few teams started the 2017 college football season on Thursday, Aug. 30, the rest of the colleges and universities in our state kicked off the season on Saturday, Sept. 2. Most of the outcomes weren’t surprising for the level of competition each teams were playing. Mississippi State University, Delta State University, Alcorn State University and the University of Mississippi won their opening games. Continue Reading
