Boozin’ at the Mississippi Legislature as State Takes Over Jackson Schools

Rep. Jay Hughes, D-Oxford, wasn’t playing today when he took to Facebook to expose a violation of the no-alcohol rule in the hallowed halls of the Mississippi State Capitol. He posted, verbatim:

ABOVE THE LAW & TRANSPARENCY. With a Supermajority you get to pick the laws you want to respect:

State law and lthe Legislature Joint Rules absolutely prohibit any alcohol inside the New Capitol building. Last night, a select few in charge chose to disregard that little law and have drinks in your sacred building. (Disclaimer – I do drink, but don’t consider myself above the law). Continue Reading

Shine a Light Through STEAM

Over the last few years, some of the hot topics in education have been science, technology, engineering, art and math, collectively known as STEAM. Earlier this year, Anik Kurkjian and the Mississippi LIGHT Collaborative organized the first Mississippi LIGHT Festival, a STEAM-focused event that attracted more that 5,000 people to the Mississippi Museum of Art to see the different lighting displays, from a giant LIGHT sculpture to a silent disco and more. On Tuesday, Sept. 19, Kurkjian and some of the collaborative will talk about the world of STEAM at the “Shining a Light on Mississippi Through S.T.E.A.M.” event, which is part of Millsaps College’s Arts & Lecture series. Two Locally Owned Restaurants Closing

Two Jackson restaurants are set to close soon: Green Ghost Tacos in Fondren and The Feathered Cow in Jackson. Green Ghost announced on Facebook that it will close on Sunday, Sept. 10, at 4 p.m. The current location will be demolished as part of the boutique hotel construction project in Fondren. The restaurant is looking to secure a new Fondren location and plans to relocate and reopen in January 2018. The restaurant’s Ridgeland location will remain open. Continue Reading

Gov. Bryant Appoints New Judge to Mississippi Supreme Court

Gov. Phil Bryant appointed Mississippi Court of Appeals Judge David M. Ishee to the Mississippi Supreme Court, after he tapped Justice Jess Dickinson to lead the Division of Child Protection Services, vacating his seat on the high court. Ishee served for 13 years on the Mississippi Court of Appeals. “The Mississippi Court of Appeals is a hard working court that handles a high volume of cases. We look forward to Judge Ishee joining the Supreme Court,” Chief Justice Bill Waller Jr. said in a statement.  

Ishee will serve in Dickinson’s spot on the court; Dickinson was only halfway through his second eight-year term on the state’s high court when Bryant pulled him to be CPS commissioner. Continue Reading

Part of Ridgewood Road Closed Until Saturday Due to Sewer Maintenance

Ridgewood Road northbound from Douglass Drive to Meadowbrook Road will be closed starting Wednesday, August 16, to allow sewer maintenance to replace a caved in section of sewer line in the middle of the intersection of Ridgewood Rd. and Meadowbrook Rd. Hinds County Residents Overwhelmingly Pass School Bond Measure

Residents who live in the Hinds County School District approved a bond measure by almost 85 percent of the vote cast on Tuesday, August 15 to help improve their district’s schools. The bond will fund building renovations, construction and in-class improvements within the district. The vote allows HCSD to issue a $59.9 million bond to make their planned improvements to the school district in the next three years. There are 55 planned projects in the school district. “I would like to thank Hinds County residents for displaying their overwhelming supporting for our children and our schools by passing this bond,” Superintendent Dr. Delesicia Martin said in a press release.
