OPINION: How Should Musicians Respond in Tragedy?

At some point, I really should know better than to read YouTube comments and Twitter replies to celebrities. And yet, I have repeatedly stumbled upon and been disturbed by some of the fan responses following the shooting at a Jason Aldean concert in Las Vegas on Oct. 1 that killed almost 60 people and injured hundreds. I have never been a fan of Aldean’s music, but he has been on my mind a lot recently due to the shooting. As someone who also plays music—albeit on a much smaller scale than the country star—I can’t help but put myself in his shoes and wonder how I might react. Continue Reading

The Mississippi Mile

In honor of the state’s bicentennial and the opening on the civil-rights and history museums in December, organizations and businesses such as Creative Mississippi, Team JXN and Blue Magnolia films have partnered together to create the Mississippi Mile in downtown Jackson. The Mile will feature a bicentennial photo gallery, which will be one of the largest pop-up, open-air galleries in the U.S., and more.  Mississippi Mile is Saturday, Dec. 9, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Capitol Street in downtown Jackson. The event is free and open to the public. Hinds County Attorney Election Heads to Runoff

Malcolm Harrison and Gerald Mumford will head to a runoff for the Hinds County attorney election, after neither candidate managed to win 50 percent of the vote plus one. The election had three candidates, and interim Hinds County Attorney Martin Perkins pulled 7 percent of the vote. Harrison won 47 percent of the vote, while Mumford won 45 percent of total votes cast in the election. Only 9,960 Hinds County voters cast ballots on Tuesday, unofficial election results show. Harrison and Mumford will face off in two weeks for a runoff election. Continue Reading

Mayor Announces New JPS Board Nominees

Jackson City Council members will meet on Wednesday morning to discuss the confirmation of five nominees for the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees. In Jackson, the mayor appoints school board members, and the city council must confirm each member. The school board, like council, consists of seven members–one from each ward of the city. Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba has nominated five new board members, the agenda for the special meeting shows. The JPS School Board previously had four members before the State threatened a takeover of the school district. Continue Reading

Dan Mullen to Florida Not As Crazy As It Sounds

Jim McElwain didn’t endear himself to the powers that be several times since he became the head coach at the University of Florida. He started things off by knocking the facilities at the university for being poor, which was true, and he compounded his problems when he said his dog could run his offense at a high level. His offense didn’t run at a high level in the two and half seasons when he was head coach, and the Gators had plenty of off-the-field problems, with several suspended this season. Last week, he made vague references to death threats that the school seemed unable to confirm. Then add a 42-7 defeat to rival University of Georgia, and things went downhill quickly for McElwain, as he and the schools said they were “mutually parting ways.” It is surprising that the head coach for Florida is the first head coach in the SEC to be relieved of his coaching duties this season. Defense Saved the Day in Saints’ Fifth-Straight Win

The New Orleans Saints’ defense deserves the credit for the win against the Chicago Bears on Sunday, Oct. 29. The Saints’ biggest liability over the last few seasons has been the reason that they have now won five games in a row. It has been a long time since New Orleans has been able to rely on its defense to help win games instead of worrying that it would let games get away. In fact, it was the offense that nearly lost the game, with running back Mark Ingram fumbling twice on consecutive positions in the fourth quarter, nearly helping Chicago get the win. JSU Wins, MSU Ranked, UM and USM Stumble, and More

It was an interesting week of ups and downs for fans of Mississippi football. While some teams were able to climb out of a rut, others fell deeper in. On Saturday, Oct. 28, a winless Jackson State University faced an early 0-3 deficit against Mississippi Valley State University after the first quarter before jumping out to a 10-3 lead at the break—a rarity for JSU this season. Jackson State added to its lead with a touchdown in the third quarter for a commanding 17-3 lead. Continue Reading
