Midseason Conerly Trophy Favorites

This might be the most wide-open season for the Conerly Trophy, which goes to the best college-football player in Mississippi each year. There are plenty of great athletes in our state this year, but no player has overwhelmed the rest of the field. There are still plenty of games left for someone to take the lead on the field. University of Mississippi quarterback Shea Patterson’s season-ending knee injury on Oct. 1 has made the Conerly landscape even less clear. Continue Reading

Patterson Out, USM and MSU for Bowl Eligibility, and More

This is quickly becoming a lost season for the University of Mississippi. The NCAA, cell-phone records and injuries have taken turns derailing this season for the Rebels. The NCAA investigation and the cell-phone records of former head coach Hugh Freeze coming to light are both well documented. The problems with the NCAA led to a bowl ban this season, and Freeze resigned after evidence of him calling escort services surfaced. Things haven’t been much better on the field, either. 13 Undefeated and Five Winless Teams Remain in College Football

As we enter the halfway mark of the season, 13 teams are undefeated teams, and five are still looking for a win at the FBS level. There is no way that all 13 undefeated teams will stay that way, but at the end of the season, a few of the winless teams could still be at 0. Here is a look at each conference with undefeated and/or winless teams and when is the best chance that a team will drop from the winless ranks or pick up its first win in 2017. There are three undefeated teams in the American Athletic Conference : the United States Naval Academy, the University of Central Florida and the University of Memphis. UCF has the toughest path to stay undefeated, as it travels to the Navy on Oct. Continue Reading

JSU, MVSU, and MC are Still Looking for First Win

There are some interesting storylines in play this college-football season for teams in our state. Can Alcorn State University win four straight SWAC East titles? Is Mississippi State University about to take a leap forward in the SEC? What will happen with the University of Mississippi and the NCAA’s investigation? As the season moves forward, we will learn the answers to those questions. Continue Reading

Mississippi’s Week-Two College Football Scores

Week two of the college-football season was another set of ups and down for our state. The University of Mississippi, Mississippi State University, Delta State University and Holmes Community College all are 2-0, and Hinds Community College is 1-0 after completing a game for the first time this season. The Eagles had to cancel their first game due to a power outage. The University of Southern Mississippi and Millsaps College bounced back from week-one losses to be at 1-1, and Alcorn State University lost its second game, also putting the Braves at 1-1. Other teams have not fared so well thus far. Continue Reading

College Football Week Two Picks

Week one of college football is finally finished after a slate of games that stretched over five days. It was a standard week of games with no thrilling upsets of top-ranked teams. There were some shocking final scores, though. However, there are several schools that some might say overachieved to start the season. Howard University deserves props for its victory over the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Bison’s win is the biggest upset against the points spread in college-football history. MSU, UM, DSU and ASU Win Season Openers; JSU, MVSU and USM Lose

While a few teams started the 2017 college football season on Thursday, Aug. 30, the rest of the colleges and universities in our state kicked off the season on Saturday, Sept. 2. Most of the outcomes weren’t surprising for the level of competition each teams were playing. Mississippi State University, Delta State University, Alcorn State University and the University of Mississippi won their opening games. Continue Reading

College Football Games to Watch

Every year it is fun to look at the schedule for each four-year college and university, and see which are the best home games. This is also a great time to check out when each school hosts its homecoming. If money and time were no object, these are the games I would take time to go see. All of them have to be home games, so no trips to Knoxville, Tenn., to watch the University of Southern Mississippi take on the University of Tennessee. The only other rule is that every team has to land on the list at some point. Continue Reading

Kiffin is a Bad Idea for the Rebels

It was stunning to see how quickly University of Mississippi head football coach Hugh

Freeze ended up out the door. The team will go with interim head coach Matt Luke, who spent the last five seasons as co-offensive coordinator. Unless Luke is able to go undefeated this season, it seems highly unlikely that he will get the head coaching job. The university will probably want to go in a direction that is as far as possible from anything Freeze related. The fact that Luke has been a part of the university since his playing days as a walk-on offensive lineman is in his favor, however. Continue Reading
