Managing editor Amber Helsel sits down to talk with Emad Al-Turk, co-founder of the International Museum of Muslim Cultures based right here in Jackson. The only museum of its kind in the United States, it opened in 2001 with an exhibit called “Moorish Spain: Its Legacy to Europe” at the same time that the international exhibition The Majesty of Spain was on display in downtown Jackson. The now-permanent museum has a new traveling exhibition called “Muslims, Christians and Jews An Exhibition of Covenants & Coexistence.” The exhibition will start in downtown Jackson, but will travel to cities around the country. Mayor Chowke A. Lumumba Issues Statement on Water Billing and Metering Investigation

Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba issued a statement on the water-billing and meeting issue in the City on Monday, April 29. Here it is verbatim:

“For too long, City of Jackson residents and businesses have been burdened by water and sewer billing problems since the system was first implemented. This system, which was intended to provide more timely and accurate bills to customers and additional revenue to the City, instead, caused many customers to frequently receive inexplicably high bills while even more customers received no bill at all for months at a time. Consequently, the financial resources of the water and sewer system have been nearly depleted by lower billed and collected revenues. This contract represents the largest investment in the City’s history- nearly $90 million which requires the City to make annual debt payments of $7 million through 2041. Continue Reading

City Implements FOG Program

Recently, the City of Jackson announced that it has started a program to keep fats, oils and grease, or FOG, out of the city’s sewer system. Here is the press release verbatim. CITY OF JACKSON ENCOURAGES RESTAURANTS TO CLEAN UP HARMFUL FATS, OILS, AND GREASE WITH ‘FOG’ PROGRAM

Jackson, Miss.—The City of Jackson is partnering with local Food Service Establishments (FSEs) to help educate business owners on the importance of keeping fats, oils, and grease—or FOG—out of the City’s sewer system. As they move through the sewers, FOG components congeal, causing line blockages or sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), which require significant resources to alleviate. In an effort to help combat this issue, the City has launched a new Fats, Oils, and Grease Control Program (FOG Program) as one part of the City’s efforts to meet the requirements of its Consent Decree with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce the volume and frequency of sewer overflows.
